Smoking accessories of XVII–XIX cc. from the taiga Low Chulym basin (South of West Siberia): pipes

One of the categories regarding attributes of tobacco smoking with Chulym Turki were smoking pipes from archaeological sites of XVII–XIX cc. In the taiga Low Chulym basin (south of West Siberia), the earliest finding of a pipe head relates to a Bukhara type, probably dating back to about the middle of XVII c. The Chulym Turki got acquainted with tobacco («Chinese ball») and smoking accessories in XVII c., most probably through Selkups. Later on, in XVIII–XIX cc., there were mainly pipes of a Bukhara type occurring with the Chulym Turki, together with appearance of pipes of a Russian type.

Pskov Setu: controversial points on their origin

The article considers different points of view regarding origin of Baltic-Finnish people of Setu inhabiting Pechora District, Pskov Oblast of Russia and the extreme south-east of Estonia. It is determined that a decisive role in the formation of Setu was played by political borders which since XIII century had cut Setu ancestors from Estonians and later on developed into a confessional barrier. The attention is paid at insufficiency of modern scientific data for final decision of a question on the origin of Setu.
